Switzerland has seen a decline in the number of people who are going to the movies in the country, with the most notable decline in multiplex cinema popularity, in a trend that has continued during 2024.
According to Federal Statistical Office (via Bluewin), Switzerland recorded around five million movie admissions in the first half of 2024, as reported, which represents a 6% decrease in the same period from 2023.
Multiplex cinemas with eight or more screens saw the biggest dip at 12% but cinemas with fewer screens seemed to perform a bit better, with only a 2% decline.
However, the interest in United States films has also seen a decline in Switzerland, as the US film market share fell from 64.3% in the first half of 2023 to 61.9% this year, but the market share of Swiss films saw a climb.
At the end of June 2024, the Swiss films market share was 8.9% which is a 1.3% uptick from the numbers reported last June.
2023’s Swiss film “Bon Schuur Ticino” has moved into third place among the most-viewed films in Switzerland in 2024, ahead of Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two.
